Mission Statement

“Our mission is to bring the eternal hope of Jesus Christ to the people of Myanmar by addressing their spiritual, physical, educational, and emotional needs.”

Spiritual Needs

The country of Myanmar is about 88% Buddhist, 8% Christian, and 4% other religions (Animist, Muslim, Hindu, etc.). Obviously a huge need is to preach the Gospel to the unsaved. But who is best equipped to do that in our day? We believe the Myanmar Christians should be evangelizing the lost in Myanmar, and so we work to build up the Church by providing them with spiritual, theological, and financial resources. One way we are doing this is through our bi-annual Christian Conferences, and through Hope Theological Seminary.

Physical Needs

Prior to the 1960s, Myanmar (formerly Burma) was a prosperous nation and one of the richest countries in South East Asia. A military coup and subsequent military dictatorship led the country into the “Burmese Way of Socialism.” The result was an economic and humanitarian disaster. When MyHope began working in Myanmar the country ranked as the seventh poorest nation in the world. The ethnic tribal groups were especially hard hit, and extreme poverty is still the normal way of life for millions. MyHope is working to end poverty through education, training, sustainable agriculture projects, and economic development, while still addressing short-term and immediate needs through our various aid programs.

Emotional Needs

The ethnic tribal groups have suffered through years of incredible adversity. During the years of the military dictatorship (1962-2011), discrimination, oppression, and physical persecution were daily realities for Christians living in the Chin Lands and elsewhere. The central government had determined that all people living in Myanmar should become “Burmese” - in language, culture, and religion (Buddhism). This led to a wave of persecution that included killings, physical beatings, arrests, torture, the mass destruction of churches and other religious buildings, closing of churches and Christian schools, and other atrocities. Because of these things, the people still live with deep emotional scars. MyHope is working to heal these scars and the divisions caused by them by promoting Christian love, unity, and forgiveness.

Through our New Hope Prison Outreach, we are helping to heal emotional hurts caused by family separation when one or both parents are imprisoned.

Educational Needs

A good education is the surest path out of poverty, but the educational situation in Myanmar remains very bleak for the vast majority of the population. It is especially troubling for children living in the rural areas. Only a fraction of children in northwest Myanmar make it to high school, and an even smaller percent actually graduate. Most children attend a few years of public school and then drop out because of poverty and hopelessness. These children end up working in the fields, or in the markets, or wherever they can, to help provide food for the family. MyHope is providing rural children with the opportunity for a better future through Hope Boarding School and Hope Preschool.
